Tulsa Trauma Counseling – EMDR trauma therapy with Racheal Elrod-Edwards, LMFT
Our kids are important to us. Often, we as parents and caregivers are the first to identify changes in their behavior and feelings. You may feel that your child has changed. You worry about how she is getting along with friends, how he is talking to his siblings, why she doesn’t seem interested in school or sports as much. You may notice that she doesn’t want to go to sleep, or that he can’t stay asleep. She may not want to leave the house anymore, or just doesn’t feel like playing. All in all, you miss that lively, confident child you know is there. These are some of the symptoms and behaviors you might see in a child, young person, or even older person who has experienced traumatic events.
Mental health trauma counseling for children does not happen on a couch and does not involve as much talking as you see in mental health counseling for adults. Children use play as their language. Words have different meanings for a child. Children speak through behavior. They use their behavior to tell us when they are overwhelmed, confused, depressed, anxious, scared and unsure. Trauma counseling can help your child tell their story, and heal from their trauma, through play.
The goal of child trauma counseling is not to provide you with a “perfect” child who never questions or struggles, but with a child who experiences age-appropriate questions and does not need to resort to intense negative behavior to manage their struggles. You are an expert on your child and I am here to partner with you to provide guidance, encouragement, and support at a time in your family when you are unsure or overwhelmed. I have a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling and truly believe that all children and their parents or caregivers need to have love and security.
At our Tulsa Counseling clinic at Legacy Counseling Service in Broken Arrow, my goal is to help you and your child by using effective trauma counseling techniques to help them overcome trauma. Through assessment and building a relationship based on play I counsel children to begin to understand the purpose for their negative behavior. I also use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with kids to help alleviate anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, nightmares and to increase self-esteem. EMDR is an effective, evidence-based mental health trauma therapy that will help your child gain confidence and security in themselves and their relationships.
In the video below Racheal talks about using EMDR trauma therapy:
Whether your child is struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem or has experienced an identified trauma, such as a car wreck, abuse, or bullying, child counseling can help. I am here to help them return to their best self, and for you to regain the connection with your child that you’ve been missing.
