Sometimes, putting emotions and thoughts onto paper is easier than figuring out how to say them with our mouths. In this therapeutic writing group, we will work to explore ourselves in a new way, gain more self-awareness, and use writing to help us put thoughts and feelings into words. We will use many forms of writing: poetry, personal narratives, blogging, etc to gain a deeper understanding of our struggles and heal from the inside out.
Therapeutic writing has been shown to improve physical and emotional health, improve relationships, and improve the work done in individual therapy. Clients in this writing group will be encouraged, but not required, to read some of their writing aloud and ask group members to share the emotions they noticed when they listened. This can be extremely helpful in understanding one’s own emotions and validating how you feel. The writing that is done in this group is not intended for publication and we don’t worry about spelling or grammar.
To participate in this ongoing, every other week writing group, you will be required to bring a journal and a pen or pencil. You will also be required to be regularly involved in individual or marital therapy and sign a release of information form so that Dr. Leedy, the facilitator, can talk with your therapist if more intensive work needs to be done on an issue that comes up in the writing group.
Group investment: $40 per session
