By Tiffany Turner-Coats, certified Health and Wellness Coach @ Legacy Counseling Services, PLLC in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
In a recent Facebook Live, I introduced the idea of a holistic approach to health and wellness. Today I’d like to go into more depth about what this approach means.
The holistic coaching approach to health and wellness has gained significant popularity, and for good reason. Unlike traditional medicine, which often focuses solely on treating symptoms or specific ailments, the holistic approach takes a more comprehensive view of a person’s overall well-being. This is the type of coaching that I provide to individuals in the Tulsa area and all throughout the United States through online coaching sessions.
So, what exactly does the holistic approach to coaching entail? Well, it recognizes that the mind, body, and spirit are interconnected and that each aspect plays a vital role in our overall health. This means that to achieve true wellness, we must address all three components and find a balance between them.
Let’s look at some of the main principles of holistic coaching:
- Prevention. Rather than waiting for illness or disease to strike, the focus of coaching is on maintaining good health through proactive measures. This can include adopting a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, getting enough sleep, and managing stress effectively. By focusing on these areas in our coaching sessions, we can build a strong foundation for optimal well-being.
- Recognizes that every individual is unique. What works for one person may not work for another. Therefore, our coaching sessions emphasize you and your specific needs. Through holistic coaching, you and I will tailor goals and plans to your individual needs. This could involve a combination of referrals to conventional medicine, alternative therapies, and lifestyle changes to address your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
- Focuses on the root cause. Unlike traditional medicine, which often treats symptoms in isolation, the holistic coaching approach looks at the root causes of health issues. In health and wellness coaching, we will work to identify how the underlying imbalances in the body or mind manifest. By addressing these root causes, rather than just suppressing symptoms, long-term healing and wellness can be achieved.
- Promotes the importance of self-care and self-awareness. In coaching, one of my main goals is to encourage and empower you to take an active role in your own health and well-being. We will do this by focusing on making informed decisions and listening to your body. This may involve practices such as mindfulness meditation, gratitude practices, or journaling to cultivate self-awareness and foster a deeper connection with yourself. After all, knowledge is power, but applied knowledge is more powerful.
In conclusion, the holistic approach to health and wellness provides a more comprehensive and integrative perspective on our well-being. By addressing the mind, body, and spirit in your health and wellness coaching sessions, and taking a proactive approach to health, you can achieve true and lasting wellness. Your health is not just about the absence of illness, but about achieving a harmonious balance in all aspects of our lives.
